Got Goats?
posted in WOD |
In the spirit of working on weakness and upcoming challenges, qualifiers, regionals and games we’d like to know what your weakness (aka. Goat) is. It’s an important part of an athletes training that all coaches try and help them to overcome. When it comes to putting in your own effort to strengthen your goats, where do you stand? Do you run from it or attack it head on? What’s been your experiences with your goats and maybe offer some insight to help others pass that hurdle.
Post thoughts to comments.

Is this one of your goats like it is mine???

No Major goats…except not being able to get there!!
Beyond that weights..but i’m getting there!
Some things are goats because I find them hard, some just because I hate ‘em!
Difficult: K2E, kipping pullups, double unders, push jerks
Hate ‘em: rowing, anything with dumbbells, box jumps
Most feared WOD: rowing sprints
When I started CF, the strength stuff was definitely a goat. I found grinders and heavy WOD’s very intimidating, and was pretty weak in a lot of areas. I really focused on that area and now prefer that stuff. I have a tendency to become a little obsessed with certain things that I want to improve on, probably to the detriment of other areas. I find that there are some things I just don’t really care as much about (double unders would be one example).

Used to be pullups-my experience with that goat….that would be a freakin’ novel! Really to me, goats are just challenges, and like anything else in life, avoiding them does nothing for you. Attacking them head on, working on them (sometimes it seems like it takes forever), and not comparing yourself to others in the learning process is key. And most importantly…don’t get frustrated or angry. It does nothing to make you better or to become more adept at that exercise. My experience has been that it actually makes you suck even more at it.
Goats now…high volume pushups and rope climbs.
After crossfitting now for over 3 years, I don’t feel the frustration of goats, but instead just see them as my challenge I need to work on for the day. Besides, life would be boring if everything came easy.
And for those newer crossfitters that perceive others doing certain exercises seemingly effortlessly….just know, it wasn’t always that way! We’ve all had to work hard at it, and each workout makes you that much physically and mentally stronger and faster. There is so much gain when you just allow yourself to stay in the struggle compared to giving up or never trying in the first place.
my goat
anything requiring an overhead lock, ohs, snatch, press, etc, ohs is worse because of having to maintain that lockout for a longer duration
oh ya and du’s
For me Goats can change daily. It all depends on how I’m feeling. If an exercise will point out my weakness, I generally hate it. As a rule, HSPU, rope climbs, GHDs, K2E.

pullups….I hang from the bar hoping that maybe someday it will actually happen.
squats…pretty sure I am going low enough now…just need to build strength to add more weight
Should have gone 30lbs today instead of 25..felt amazing after 10 hours of sleep 19:10
Speaking of goats….
35 lb. db’s

I don’t enjoy left arm push presses.
Great WOD today…speaking of goats …weights!
It was fun, do able (30 lbs)..24:40.. I look forward to doing it again!
Weights are the hardest for me mentally and physically too!
I always do it…sometimes I “choose less wt” but always feel better if I take the correct weight to challange myself!
The Wods these days have included more weight, that has increased my comfort level..and slowly but surely my strengh…looking forward to these new challanges…as always!
Thanks to my helper at the end
My goat – Box Jumps! Hate them. At the last gym I could do them. I have a battle with my mind and the wall. So scared of falling on my face!
I forgot to mention squats only because I’m not so good at get down far enough and keeping my chest up. Still working on it!!!
