On vacation . . .
Worked out with Crossfit Maui Raw Fitness on Saturday morning and Wednesday evening. Saturday was on the beach for a team relay. Just imagine working out in the sand, then walking five steps into the ocean after the WOD to cool down. Very nice.
Today was a deadlift grinder (ended up @ 3 X 235 Sumo DL) followed by Annie (10:24) at “the box”.
Great experience working out at another Crossfit affiliate. It is interesting to see how things are set up, how the WODs are run and who the clients are.
It has been my experience that Crossfitters are typically “above average” on the social scale and very welcoming wherever you go. From this trip and my previous times on Maui, this is also the case for the Hawaiian people I have had the opportunity to interact with. They are typically very personable, welcoming and of course, relaxed and laid back.
With regard to Crossfit Maui Raw Fitness, you get the best of both worlds: the Crossfit outlook and enthusiasm with a Hawaiian perspective. The result is it was certainly a fun couple of WODs. MRF is run by Robert and Kristi who were very accommodating and Crossfit competent. After the Saturday morning beach WOD, we were invited to go back to their place for UFC 107; now that is hospitality Maui style. Robert is a former college athlete who is a Physiotherapist which obviously gives him a good foundation. Hopefully, I’ll have another chance to sneak in one more WOD before moving on to Kauai where I couldn’t find an affiliate. Take care.
PS: I heard it was in the -40s this week back in Edmonton; hang in there everyone. Much nicer out here this week; timing is everything.
PPS: Chad – Did you get into any of the drama at the BBS or did you manage to steer clear? Interesting to read about the “dis-affiliation” of Wolf and Everett . Complicated times with complex issues I’m sure.
It has been a real pleasure getting to meet and work with Peter. Excellent technique, great intensity, and a great guy (good work on the double unders tonight!). The coaches at CrossFit Edmonton are obviously doing a fantastic job. I have to agree with Peter that CrossFitters in general are well “above average” on the social scale and it has been so much fun getting to meet CrossFitters from around the world as they come to Maui for vacation. We hold out the invitation to join us to any of you that may make it to Maui. ALOHA!

Peter: next time I am sneaking into your suitcase. Thanks for rubbing salt in our open wounds! lol but we are glad you brought the warmer weather back with you.
Peter, sounds like you’re having a good time in Maui. Aloha from the frozen North, though it seems we are having a bit of a reprive for the next couple of days.

Hey Bruce,
Love the discussion. Would it be possible to move it to our fan page instead of the group page? There’s more people there and this way you can put out better discussions. The fan page is at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Saint-Albert-AB/CrossFit-Edmonton/106842940926
You can even use the “Discussions” tab to start new threads!
We don’t discuss. We just are.

Moderate gravity day.
When someone on your friends list posts to the fan page, it comes up on the news feed in Facebook. Click on the “Just Fans” tab above the wall posts to make a new wall post or as Chad said the “Discussions” tab along the top to start a new topic.
WOD Books are finally in!!!!
They will be available first thing tomorrow morning.

I’ve been reading some of the posts about the “loss of community”. We can still post discussion here people. I’m not going to use facebook fan page to post anything. Sorry. What’s the point of posting somewhere else when the original fight was to keep this site alive?
Yes it’s nice to see how people did on the WOD and yeah it’ll be missed. It’s nice to be able to offer encouragements, or congrats etc… or simple banter back and forth. You can still do that here. The community I think about are the weekend WODs, the socials, the friendships made. The only loss for me in this regard is an electronic one… and minor at that.
I love crossfit with or without the website. I love the community with or without the website.
I think about the old facility, and how NONE of us stopped coming because it was a dirty, dusty stinky teenage boy infested place. The addiction to the WODs, the community etc… is what made us show up. We adapted and made it work for us. Why not do the same for the website?
By the way… Sandra, I’m bringing non-Paleo.
I’m actually not quite sure why everyone quit posting – I guess if the WOD isn’t up, maybe posting results doesn’t really make sense? I don’t think it’s ever been suggested that we shouldn’t post results if we want to (I’ve pretty much continued to do so & Chad has never told me that I shouldn’t). A lot of the banter (and by banter, I mean making fun of Brian
) seemed to arise from posting results, impressions about the WOD, etc. so maybe people aren’t used to making those kinds of posts without it being related to results. I don’t know.
There are some aspects of the FB fan page that I like. I like that when someone makes a new post, it comes up in your news feed. For some people, this may be a negative, but I like that you can see any new posts without necessarily going to the page to check. Another thing I like is that if you post a new discussion, the topic stays there – you don’t miss it if you don’t happen to go to the site on a particular day & it’s easy to contribute to the discussion at any time. It also gives any member of the fan page the ability to start a topic. I think that back when we only had the group page, Chad had been hoping that it would become more active with discussions, but it didn’t really take off, probably because we all are used to posting everything here.
I think that we’ll all get used to the new system and go with whatever seems to work best for us – whether it’s posting on the fan page, starting to post here again or maybe not really posting too much at all.
Just for kicks, I’ll put this post on the fan page too!
